A new chapter is beginning for the famous old neighbourhood of Lingotto in Turin. One of the city’s symbolic landmarks is changing face and name and adding a further 8000 m² to its overall area to accommodate new shops, services and opportunities to congregate and interact.

The project designed by L22 Retail, the Lombardini22 Group brand whose mission is to create and maintain value for retail facilities, involved the complete restyling of the facility while conservatively enhancing many of the building’s original features. The plant-engineering and exposed beams, lighting and floor surfaces: everything helps bring out the place’s industrial spirit.

An authentic, pulsating, lively and multifaceted fragment of city will be recreated in the new Lingotto. The retail spaces are set out to create a unitary pathway that begins at the new north entrance, connects all the courtyards in the first-floor shopping arcade, and then descends to the ground-floor spaces of Pavilion V that was previously used for trade fair purposes.

Restyling has helped conserve and enhance the construction while drawing out its industrial spirit.

The southern part of the Lingotto building, Pavilion V, has been joined onto the shopping mall to form a new covered plaza for the shops and room to congregate and socialise. A new food court constructed near the cinema will complete and enhance the food & beverage facilities.

The opening of Pavilion V - covering 8500 m² - will provide an extra 35% of retail space, thanks to a 40-metre link constructed by sectioning twenty-eight 35-metre-long girders.

The large, eye-catching 550 m² open space connecting the ground floor to the first floor over a total height of 12 metres is the most distinctive feature of extensive modernisation work on the spaces.

The shops are now set over two levels and can be easily reached thanks to new entrances at street level and panoramic lifts.

The restyling project designed by L22 Retail was completed by developing the system of entrances to the shopping mall that were given a more striking and easily recognisable identity. Lombardini22’s plan to make the new entrances eye-catching and distinctive as possible involved the construction of a new front aligned with the building’s inner facade that breaks down the linearity of the elevation and arcade by creating a striking new feature and by incorporating a filter area treated as a ‘green’ space for congregating and socialising.

L22 Retail’s entire project instils the mall with the kind of powerful and striking identity associated with Turin: linearity and spaciousness, freedom of movement and functional variety: business, utilities, entertainment, and hospitality. Turin with its 18 km of interconnected porticos, unified and distinctive, composed of miscellaneous forms and features that give the city such a powerful identity that is instantly recognisable in Italy and worldwide.

The regenerating of the inside and outside spaces in sync with the original architecture is carefully coordinated with the repositioning of its logo; 8 Gallery simultaneously leaves and welcomes the new Lingotto Shopping Mall, identifying with the iconic landmark accommodating the mall.
